The Village Idiot Strikes Again

Redo of Lincoln Bathroom, White House

As if the meeting with Xi wasn’t bad enough. The war against Chicago continues. The shutdown continues. We could go on but we’ll let Axios summarize the crimes and punishments that never seem to end.

These actions have come so thick and fast that the marble makeover of the Lincoln bathroom seems to be one of the more forgettable ones.

Yet it fixes in memory the antic behavior of the moron who tore off the East Wing.

It reminds me of Graham Greene’s story, “The Destructors,” about a gang of street kids in postwar London who devise a

methodical plan to completely and secretly demolish a beautiful, old, two-hundred-year-old house (said to be designed by Christopher Wren) from the inside out. The house is one of the few standing structures left amid the wartime rubble.

The story explores themes of destruction, creation, and the breakdown of society and values in the post-war era.

Years ago I used to teach this story to my lit classes. None of us, me included, could finally comprehend the motivation of the gang’s leader (and his followers) to demolish a thing of such esthetic and historical value.

With Trump, the motivation is clearer and therefore even more insufferable.

  1. I now think of Trump as a Rodney Dangerfield- I don’t get no respect.
I am his age and have always lived in the NYC metro area. He was always considered the buffoon- never taken seriously. Now he has arrived at the political summit and he is still snickered at for his vacuous ramblings. The Clown Prince. The Pathetic Vulgarian. He will always be Rodney Dangerfield. He prefers it that way.
